PUI PT CESS Team held the first FGD of ITMOB

Presentation from the Researcher of The Agency of Regional Planning, Research and Development of Sumedang Regency

[cess.unpad.ac.id, 06/07/2022] As one of the megadiverse nations, Indonesia possesses substantial biological resources, which are crucial to the maintenance of diverse biological production systems in rural regions. The system is a small-scale economic activity, and the majority of farmers participating in it are resource-poor. Despite the fact that substantial human involvement in rural regions tries to enhance landscape productivity, agricultural landscapes continue to support significant biodiversity and ecosystem services. Along with increased population pressure, a greater reliance on local resources and a continuous reliance on traditional energy sources have brought into doubt the sustainability of resources. As the negative influence of agricultural practices on the environment and the resources contained within it receives increased attention, resource evaluation (analysis) has also been a focal point in connection to agricultural production. This scenario served as the impetus for the Center for Excellence in Higher Education Science and Technology (PUI-PT) the Center for Environment and Sustainability Science (CESS) to perform trans-disciplinary research to evaluate its sustainability. Research institutions demonstrate their excellence and dependability by undertaking high-quality research at the national and international levels. These research endeavors must be followed by publications in prestigious international and national journals. In addition to being in the form of high-quality publications, research results are supposed to be capable of resolving numerous national issues. Therefore, research efforts become a means of demonstrating scientific credibility and providing community advantages. Therefore, research activities must be organized and have a methodical road map with quantifiable achievement objectives. In recent years, PUI-PT CESS has participated in international research, including collaborations with IGES, Japan, and INREM, Philippines, under the term “ITMOB-Integrated Traditional and Modern Bioproduction System” ITMOB’s research has entered its second year, with one of its research agendas focusing on Work Package-2, i.e. collectively building a shared framework to create future scenarios for bioproductive systems that are sustainable and climate change and ecosystems-resilient. In an effort to reach the WP 2 objective, PUI-PT CESS researchers engaged in focus group discussions with Sumedang Regency stakeholders. On Monday, July 1, 2022, the FGD activity was organized in conjunction with the Regional Development Planning, Research, and Development Agency (BAPPPPEDA) of the Sumedang Regency Government. This was the first FGD held as part of the Stakeholder Engagement process for the E-Asia research. Participating in the event were twenty-four affiliated agencies and subdistrict governments. The FGD activity was inaugurated by the Director of BAPPPPEDA and followed with a presentation by BAPPPEDA researchers on the hazards of climate change on the bioproduction system in the Sumedang Regency. Next came the explanation from the PUI-PT CESS researcher, which included a summary of the E-Asia research operations in the Sumedang Regency. After the resource people’s presentations concluded, the next session consisted of a roundtable discussion with all of the participants, during which they discussed pertinent topics regarding climate change and bioproduction systems in their various regions. In addition, at the conclusion of the event, attendees were given a questionnaire to evaluate the Nature For Future indicators. The discussion concluded with an agreement that all parties are eager to participate in and support E-Asia research initiatives, particularly WP-2, which focuses on generating scenarios for climate- and ecosystem-resilient bioproduction systems. The next FGD activity will be conducted with community groups on Thursday, July 28, 2022, in partnership with the Sumedang Regency Government’s BAPPPPEDA.
