Center for Environment and Sustainability Science (CESS) is the new name of the Center for Natural Resources and Environmental Research which at its inception was called the Institute of Ecology which was established by Decree of the Chancellor of the University of Padjadjaran Number: 43/Kep/UNPAD/72, dated September 23, 1972. Changes the name of the Institute of Ecology is a consequence of the implementation of Government Regulation no. 5 of 1980 concerning Principles of Organization of State Universities/Institutes. In accordance with the Decree of the Chancellor of the University of Padjadjaran No. 85/1/01/06/A/1983, dated September 16, 1983, the name of the Institute of Ecology was changed to the Center for Natural Resources and Environmental Research (PPSDAL). Then in 2018 PPSDAL turned into one of the centers of excellence at Padjdjaran University with the Rector’s Decree Number 63/UN6.RKT/Kep/HK/2018 concerning the Establishment of Centers of Excellence for Inter and Transdisciplinary Research on Environment and Sustainability Science (CITRESS) which will hereinafter be referred to as with the name Center for Environment and Sustainability Science (PULIK) or Center for Environment and Sustainability Science (CESS).
PULIK/CESS, which was initially known as the Institute of Ecology, was established as a response to the development program that was intensively carried out by the New Order government. With the main objective of contributing to efforts to maintain ecological balance (environment) and development, the Ecological Institute, at that time, determined the orientation of its programs and research activities on the subject of Ecology and Development (eco-development) with the ultimate goal of achieving sustainable community welfare. human well-being), with a multi-, inter- and trans-disciplinary approach.
PULIK/CESS is the first institution in Indonesia to develop inter- and transdisciplinary environmental studies and sustainability sciences and disseminate basic and applied knowledge in the field of development ecology. This center of excellence has the following tasks:
- Research/study and/or study in the context of scientific development that is multi-, inter- and/or transdisciplinary in nature in order to solve problems faced by the community and develop science within the scope of environmental studies and Sustainability Science;
- Training related to expertise in the management and protection of Natural Resources-Environment and Sustainability Science;
- Coordination of the utilization of researchers in the management and protection of SDA-LH and Sustainability Sciences (at Unpad level);
- Development of professional capabilities of researchers and support staff involved in activities at the Center of Excellence;
- Management of international scale seminars/symposiums;
- Evaluation of the implementation of the activities carried out;

In connection with the expected role of the Center for Environmental Excellence and Sustainability Science, previously PPSDAL (the Institute of Ecology) Unpad has carried out various research activities that contribute directly or indirectly to efforts to prevent environmental damage including negative impacts on society due to development carried out and efforts to prevent environmental damage. supporting environmentally friendly development, including initiating the establishment of the Environmental Science Masters Study Program as a vehicle to encourage the realization of an ecologically literate society. To realize this role, PULIK/CESS has carried out various research activities, workshops, seminars and conferences. In carrying out these activities, PULIK/CESS develops an interdisciplinary approach both in the management of natural resources and the environment as well as education and training in the field of development ecology. Concepts and research results that have been produced have been disseminated to the scientific community, decision makers, planners, managers and the public through publications, mass media, seminars and other official meetings. In carrying out these activities, PULIK/CESS collaborates with government and private institutions both at home and abroad.
However, in the last four decades since PPSDAL (the Institute of Ecology) was established, environmental issues related to “development” have become increasingly symptomatic. Various damages to natural resources and the environment are taking place at an increasingly alarming rate of acceleration, including environmental damage in the West Java Province. To respond to these worsening problems, PPSDAL has transformed into a Center for Environmental Excellence and Sustainability Science which has the tasks and functions as mentioned above in the next five years and is expected to be able to play more roles in solving various environmental and sustainability problems that have occurred in the past. these last few years.
